Accessibility audit

This activity is due before class on the due date.

Watch the following videos in Frank Elavksy’s mini-course on Accessibility in Visualization:

This adds up to about 33 minutes of video content (less if you speed up the playback).

In this course, Elavsky talks about a social model of disability, and highlights “disabilities in the built environment”. He frames accessibility as a moral and ethical imperative, and places responsibility on the tool designers (i.e., all of us) to work toward accessible data vis. (It’s also the law!) The questions below ask you to apply that frame to your own work this quarter.

After watching, answer the following questions in the text entry box in Canvas.

  1. List two ideas or terms that you learned, that you did not know about before.
  2. Consider your submissions to Assignment 3 OR 4. What perceivable barriers exist in the visualization you produced? (If you look at A4, consider the ethical vis only.)
  3. Identify the operable barriers that exist in your Assignment 5 submission and/or final project.
